Sunnday, Mom coms to my horse house an there is a Roxie face lump that was not there Saterday.

She does Mom Freekout an i gets butes in some grain so I is all good. Mom is all "I will watch this to see whut happens."
Then she is all "Is this a in-feckshun or did you get kicked in the mouf?" An i refuses to anser this.
So she keeps with bute-givings (wich is fine a-cuz of they make mole-bottom flavor bute now). But after a few days, Hay Lady is all "Hay Roxie, com get brekkest hay!" an I is all, "whut is the use. Eeting brings pain. I donot care for hays." And Hay Lady note-a-fies Mom an Mom calls a Veternary Man.
So we goes in to a wash rack an I is all "Roxie."

Mom coms to our Horse House one day and is all "Hey Roxie an Bluey, you guys get lunches now." We is all a collecktive "HOORAY!!!" until Mom serves us this lunch. It coms in a tiny hay net. Like, the net is normul size. But the Hay Holes is tiney.

So Mom notises a puffy on my Roxie leg a liddle while ago. She is all "AAAHHHHH" but I is all "No Mom, I is fine." Mom chooses not to listen to a Roxie.
So Mom is like "Let us go see if you has a laeme." So she takes me to a rownd pen an I is in-spierd so I is like "ATHLETIC!" and "AIRS ABOVE A GROWND" which if you donot know, meens you jomp up and down and be all like "BOING BOING BOING." Oh and you may also buck in place. Mom decides I do not has a laemeness but I has to ware a Roxie Ice Pax evry day any way.

Veternary Man coms to see me, Roxie, also.

Veternary Man is a person who I rememmer from last time, he does POKINGS and YANKINGS and TRODDINGS. So this time, i sees him and his Veternary Equipmint and I is all like "No. Nervus." but relly he is OK this time. He just squirts a bunch of goop-stuff on my leg and feels it with a Roxie Leg Feeler Thingie. This has happened before also, so I chills out.

He tells Mom there is NOTHING wrong with me! Hooray! He says per-haps a kick incident has happened to my Roxie leg (and that mebbe my constant buttock-biting of Tiny Bloo Horse may have pervoked this), but that my Uhspensory Liggimint is a-ok fine. And I is like "OK, sweet."

And then Mom is all "We go back to WORK now, Roxie!" and now I is not shure how I feels abowt all this soundness any more.

So. One day I is hanging out in a Roxie horse house, mining my own Roxie Bizniss an thinking of carrits.

Then I sees Mom coming to my Horse House with a Tiny Bloo Horse an I is like, "wow, that is one tiny bloo horse." And THEN she puts this strange horse into MY House! An she is all "Roxie this is your new liddle sister" an I is like "WHUT."

And then I is all "GGGGRRRRRRRR" and also "OH HECK NO I IS NOT SHAERING MY MOM AN MY SADDUL AND MY GRAIN FOODS."
SO i maeke Snake Eyes at Tiny Bloo Horse. An she is all "meh" and she wannders arownd.

She does NOT respeckt my Giant Roxie Size! And she helps her own self to my Roxie Hay!

And so I threttens to BITE her! And then she kicks at me! An then I bites her for reals! And then there is more respeckt.

Grizzlies are high profile this year.

A lingering winter and late berry crop kept bears in proximity to humans longer than normal, perhaps contributing to a stream of headlines about grizzlies killing people and people killing grizzlies.

Meanwhile, a young lady on a big horse charged out of the pack of grizzly stories near Glacier National Park. In a cloud of dust, the 25-year-old wrangler likely saved a boy’s life while demonstrating that skill, quick-thinking and guts sometimes are the best weapons against a head-on charging grizzly.

On July 30, Erin Bolster of Swan Mountain Outfitters was guiding eight clients on a horse ride on the Flathead National Forest between West Glacier and Hungry Horse, Mont.

“It’s the shortest ride we offer,” she said Wednesday, recalling the incident. “We’d already led two trips that morning. It’s always been a very routine hour-long loop, until that day.”

The group included a family of six plus a vacationing Illinois man, who’d booked the trip for his 8-year-old son’s first horse-riding experience.

The young boy was riding Scout, a steady obedient mount, following directly behind Bolster, who was leading the group on Tonk, a burly 10-year-old white horse of questionable lineage.

Tonk isn’t the typical trail mount. Best anyone knows, he’s the result of cross-breeding a quarter horse with a Percheron – a draft horse. Bolster is 5-foot-10, yet she relies on her athleticism to climb into the saddle aboard Tonk.

“He was one of the horses we lease from Wyoming and bring in every year,” Bolster said, noting that she’d picked him from the stable in May to be hers for the season.

“He’s a very large horse – 18 hands high. That intimidates a lot of riders. But I’ve always loved big horses. He’s kind of high-strung and spooky, the largest of our wrangling horses. I like a horse with a lot of spirit, and I was really glad to be on him that day.”

Bolster has accumulated a wealth of experience on and around horses of national and even world class. She started riding at 4 years old, became a pro trainer at 15, graduated from high school at 16 in Roanoke, Va., and ran a riding academy for several years.

Seeking a more laid-back lifestyle, she wrangled in Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic before moving to Whitefish three years ago to guide tourists during the summer around Glacier National Park and ski through winter.

“It’s the country, the mountains and the idea of seeing lot of wildlife that appealed to me, ironically enough,” she said.

Bolster quickly racked bear experience, too, although until July 30, it was always at a distance.

“At the peak of the season, we were seeing bears daily,” she said. “The wranglers name them so we can let each other know where they are. Usually the bears just keep feeding in the distance or they run away when we come. Just seeing them is a treat for us and our guests.”

Because they guide around Glacier Park, bear awareness is part of the preparation wranglers get when hired by Swan Mountain Outfitters.

“We go over a lot of wildlife scenarios in our training,” Bolster said. “We learn to watch our horses for signals of possible trouble so we can steer clear.”

That’s the key, she said: Avoid trouble with a moose or a bear.

“We can’t use pepper spray when we’re riding because that could blind the horse,” she said. “And using a gun would spook the horses and probably produce more danger than safety.”

That’s how she went to work that day: a young but seasoned pro rider on a new, huge and spirited horse, unarmed in the wilderness with eight dudes.

“It was a pleasant ride until we came around a corner on the trail and my horse stopped firm and wouldn’t move,” Bolster said. “He never refuses to go, so that caught my attention quick.”

But not fast enough to avoid the spike white-tailed deer that burst out of the brush and glanced off Tonk’s left front shoulder.

As Tonk spun from the impact, Bolster saw a huge grizzly bear crashing through the forest right at the group in pursuit of the deer. Horses panicked and guests grabbed saddle horns for the ride of their lives.

“No amount of training could keep a horse from running from a 700-pound charging bear,” she said.

Seven of the horses sensed the danger, scrambled around and galloped back on the trail toward the barn.

But Scout bolted perpendicular to the trail into the timber packing the 8-year-old boy.

“The deer peeled off and joined the horses sprinting down the trail,” Bolster said. “So the bear just continued running right past me. I’m not sure the bear even knew the roles had changed, but now it was chasing a horse instead of a deer.”

The grizzly was zeroed in on Scout and the boy – the isolated prey in the woods.

Adding to the drama, the boy’s father, an experienced rider, could not convince his horse that it was a good plan to ride to his son’s rescue.

“The last thing he saw over his shoulder as his horse ran away was the grizzly chasing his boy,” Bolster said.

With the bear on Scout’s heels, Tonk’s instinct was to flee with the group of horses. But Tonk responded to Bolster’s heels in his ribs as she spun the big fella around. They wheeled out of a 360 and bolted into the trees to wedge between the predator and the prey.

“The boy was bent over, feet out of the stirrups, clutching the saddle horn and the horse’s neck,” she said. “That kept him from hitting a tree limb.

“But all I could think about was the boy falling off in the path of that grizzly.

“I bent down, screamed and yelled, but the bear was growling and snarling and staying very focused on Scout.

“As it tried to circle back toward Scout, I realized I had to get Tonk to square off and face the bear. We had to get the bear to acknowledge us.

“We did. We got its attention – and the bear charged.

“So I charged at the bear.”

Did she think twice about that?

“I had no hesitation, honestly,” Bolster said. “Nothing in my body was going to let that little boy get hurt by that bear. That wasn’t an option.”

Tonk was on the same page.

With a ton of horse, boulder-size hooves and a fire-breathing blonde thundering at it, the bear came within about 10 feet before skittering off to the side.

But it quickly angled to make yet another stab at getting to Scout and the boy – who had just fallen to the ground.

“Tonk and I had to go at the bear a third time before we finally hazed him away,” she said.

“The boy had landed in some beargrass and was OK. Scout was standing nearby.”

Bolster gathered the boy up with her on Tonk, grabbed Scout’s lead and trotted down the trail.

“The boy was in shock,” she said. “I looked back and could see the bear had continued to go away through he woods, but I had another five or 10 minutes of riding before I got back with the group.”

Not until she reunited with her riders – all OK and standing in various stages of confusion with their horses – did she start to shake.

“I looked at Tonk, and he was wet with sweat and shaking, too,” she said.

She was especially concerned for the boy’s father, who probably suffered the most terror in the ordeal.

“He was fine, and I got my biggest tip of the season,” Bolster said. “My biggest hope is that the boy isn’t discouraged from riding. This was a one-in-a-million event.”

For the next few days, the outfitter shut down the trail rides and Bolster joined other wranglers and a federal grizzly bear expert to ride horses through the area looking for the bear.

“They tracked it for a long way and concluded that it kept going out of the area,” she said. “Judging from the tracks and my description of how high the bear came up on Tonk, the grizzly expert estimated it weighed 700-750 pounds.

“This was a case of us being in the wrong place as a bear was already in the act of chasing its natural prey. He was probably more persistent because he was really hungry.”

Bolster and the other wranglers vowed to have bear spray on their belts to make sure they can defend their guests during breaks on the ground.

“But when you’re riding, the horse is your best protection, if you can stay on,” she said.

“Some of the horses I’ve ridden would have absolutely refused to do what Tonk did; others would have thrown me off in the process. Some horses can never overcome their flight-animal instinct to run away.”

In those minutes of crisis, the big lug of mongrel mount proved his mettle in a test few trail horses will face in their careers.

Tonk’s grit moved Bolster. She wasn’t about to send him back to Wyoming with the other leased horses.

“Two weeks ago, I closed the deal and bought him,” Bolster said as she was wrapping up her 2011 wrangling season.

“After what he did that day, he had to be mine.”

I has my very own Roxie barn, with Roxie scritch post, and Roxie paddocksie. I shared this barn with Luke for a wile but then he goed to the passture next to me. An then he is all "ROXIE! ROXIE ROXIE ROXIE ROXIE ROXIEROXIEROXIEROXIEROXIEROXIE!!!!!!!!!!!" an he runs the fense an acts like a dumb. For days an days an days. This maede Mom all >:(
Then he tryed to kick the fense down an he scraped his legs an Mom is like "You are a BAD HORSE and a DOMB HORSE an you must go away." So he goes away.
This is a good thing. He is a Needy Horse an they is annoying.
I sumwhat enjoyed having a frend tho, so Mom has promissed me a little sisster soon! This is also a new thing an shuld be fun. Altho I is NOT sharing Roxie grain foods or Roxie scritch post.
Mom has been bilding me things. She builds me Roxie jomps! An Mom's Matt bilds me Roxie jomp stannerds. This is cool. :)

Mom also bilds me a water mellun pockit for one of my pink Roxie Saddul Pads. This is a treet pockit. Meening i gets treets frum it. Hooray!

I also fineley gets a new Roxie saddul. This one is a much bedder fit on my back than my old jomping saddul. Mom does not liek it as much but my Roxie back is more importent.

Whut I do not liek is that my Roxie buttocksie looks big in it. :(

I, Roxie, has a verry bizzy week.
I goes to the FAIR wich is where peeple go to look at things. An I is a Crime Preventur Horse, in the CAR PARKING PLACES. An I is SO good at this!
Heer is me gettin reddy to be a police horse.

I gets to ware a raydio. This is offishul police stuff. Yup. And it is all "PSSSSHHHHT blah blah blah human words blah blah beeop beep PSSSSSSSHHHHT." And I ignores this cuz it does not say "Hay Roxie, com get grains."
I sees all SORTS of weerd things at teh fair. Mom does not get picsures of some weerd things, like such as the rodeo BULL cows. I sniffded them with my Roxie Nose! I is brave! An I also sniffded the small cows that the cowboy men jomp on an wrassle with. I also sees horses galluping arownd, and I also sees a weerd truck with logs on it.

This truck pikcs up logs an puts them on its back. It is neet! I watchded this prossess.
Oh an ther is also a whoppity thing in the sky, it flaps arownd an it is reel loud. Heer is it beehind me, Roxie. In the sky.

This is no big deel tho, not wen you is Roxie.

I is verry good at this job. I watchded an maede sure no one is a Crime Person who brakes cars. An I makes sure that no one sneeks into a car parking place with out first giving monneys to the parking ladies. I evun helps a man locayte his car which he culd not find! An Mom is all prowd of me, an then I go back to Horse House. :)

A few days later, I goed to a new Horse House. I is gonna lern about trails an water stuff an about being rided in a town. I will go back to former Horse House evenshually.

So many peeples has asked for the ressipe to my Roxie Birthday Cake that I feel I must share this.

Get a bag of treets that yor horse liekes, such as thees carrot spise ones. Put a hole bunch of thees treets inna bowl with waters. Let the treets soke until they are a mooshy blob. Then mix this mooshy blob with mole-bottoms (Roxies do NOT sware) an shaepe them into a cake, in a bowl or a grain food tub. Goop some more mole-bottoms on the cake. You can rite your horse's horse naeme on the cake with mole-bottoms, too. Then decorait that cake with more treets of a diffrint kind, or carrots, or Oreo cookies wich are SO GOOD. An use carrots as candles.

All done!

Then take your Roxie out to eet grasses as a dissert. After the cake.

I haev somthing to pass along. This is not somthing that I, Roxie, wuld normaly do since this blog is for and by and abowt me, Roxie, but I will do this becuz I has herd of some horses who needs a home. Mom's frend sent this an I, Roxie, is passin it along so som carriage-pulling horses may not haev to go thru a auction. I, Roxie, almost goed thru a auction once. These are no fun. So if anyone can halp these horses, it would be neet:

"Just received this email today. Three driving horses for sale cheap. They have been part of a SF concession near the wharf. Good opportunity for someone.

Due to the unexpected death of the operator of the carriage driving franchise at San Francisco's Fisherman's wharf area 3 horses are available for immediate adoption for a fee of $450 (to cover the boarding expenses incurred so far) The family of the deceased are not horse people and cannot care for these animals.

Chester - Gray Percheron, around 12 to 14 year old gelding. Solid driving horse who has worked in the city for the last five years. Has also done parades. He is a sweetie.

Colonel - Buckskin Draft/Quarter horse cross who looks more QH than draft. 7 year old gelding, really pretty and sweet. Colonel was being trained to work in the city but has not actually been driven there.

Gilly - Bay Standardbred, 19 years old, has worked in the city for approx. 10 years. The horse that all the new drivers were given to start with.

These horses are currently at a boarding facility 45 minutes north of San Francisco. Their board is paid until Feb 8 at which time the deceased's family want them off their hands.

So. Gosh. Wow. I fergot about somthing. I fergot that there is a Outside, and I, Roxie, can get rided out there!
Here is the thing. Normaly since this is winnter, Mom does not show up wen it is light. She comes in on some mornings before Roxie brekkest and she cleans all of the stalls, inclooding my Roxie stall which is the best of all the stalls in the Horse House. Or she comes at night after Roxie dinner, an that is wen she rides me in the areena. I LIKES the areena! It is safe an fun an lately there has been jomps in there too. Jomps is fun, exspecially when you wack them with your Roxie feet an they fall! Hooray!
But anyways. Well. Yesserday Mom comes BEFORE Roxie dinner! An it is light Outside, an she is all "Roxie we is goin down the road." Now, I is not a fan of goin down the road. It is SO SCAREY! It has always been scarey. I HAETE goin away from my Horse House! An I try to turn around like a millyun times but Mom will not permit this. It has always been this way. I think one day she will just give up an let me go home, and I will never know if this is so unless I, Roxie, is persistint.
So anyways. We is goin around the driveway, an this is fine, cept there is stuff that must be SNOOOOOOORTed at. Liek those pallat things. Those has always been there, but I must threttin them an maeke them stand still. So I SNOOOOOORTs at them! Hooray! Oh, an then there is those big bolder-rocks. The ones wich surround the lawn-grass. Mom uses those as mownting blocks. They must ALSO be SNOOOOOORTed at! Yep! Then we goes around the drive-way some more times, an then Mom is all, "Roxie, go onto the road." An I is pointed that way, and then I sees a MONSTER!!! It is SO SO SO SO SO SCAREY! I KNEW there was a MONSTER there! So I spins an I BOLTS, as fast as I can!!!

So. It is Vedderan's Day. This is a day where you be nice to all the persons an horses who go to war an fight. They fight so I can eat treets an live in a big dry stall. I, Roxie, apreshiate this.
I must tell you all that Mom's brother Scott who is a Vedderan came to visit, and he RIDED me! Ther is no picsures cuz Mom is dum somtimes. But I ashure you that I is a good Roxie for Scott. Except that Mom tied me up to put on my saddul an I was lieke, I don' wanna be tied up, so I setted back an tryed to break loose! It is so fun! Except when it dosn't work. It totallee dosn't work. :(

5) Excep for my Roxie curb, it is 6 and one-haff inches.

6) I is starrting to lern to JUMP. i has jumpded X fences a cuple of times an one time i evun jumpded a RAIL. An i hits fences, an i nocks them over, an then i get re-warded cuz Mom gets off of my Roxie back and fixes them. Hooray! Nocking fences down!

7) I HAETE clippurs. I haete haet haete them! Mom haz sed that I, Roxie, will be clippured this winnter so we can ride for longer with out me making Roxie Swett. But I don' think she reuhlizes that I, Roxie, will NOT allow this!! I will get violint, an i will nock her down too. Seriosly.

Anyways, we goes to this plaece high up lots of hills! This is “Riggins,” it is not things that go on your saddul. I mean, it IS things that go on your saddul, but it is also a place name.

We is very high up.

An i goed thru a trail corse with a scarey bridge an a mailbox, ooh an ther was Smartie candies in the mailbox an I getted to EET them! Hooray! An in som classes I got rided, an I goed in a big areena with other horses an we trotted an cannered arownd together, an then i get ribbins! Oh an I getded a ribbin for the trael class too. OH an I almost forgetted, ther was too classes wher I goed in the areena all by my Roxie self, an we trotted an cannered an did circles an a "free walk," whut ever that is, an I is like, "I is Roxie! This is EESY!" an I did all the things Mom asked. Except for one tiem she was like "right leed!" an I'm like, "left leed!" an so I hadda try agin, but then I did right leed an I was Such A Good Girl. An after that I goed to the new trailer an I eeted more alflalfla an peppermints, an then they said my sort-of name an I, Roxie, getted a Red Ribbin an a Bloo Ribbin! Woot! Evryone clapped for me, Roxie, an came an petted me! I is Such A Good Girl! Heer is me with my ribbins. The too big ribbins is for the classes wher I wuz by my Roxie self. I think it is dresahzj?

Ther is a nice man at this show an he took lots of picsures so I will have reel good picsures of me, Roxie, to post soon.
For now, heer is a picsure of me an Mom an Meegan an her horse Jassper. Jassper is the only horse at this show who is meen to me, well him an a little buk-skin mare too, they both maede pinned eers an made Snake Eyes at me, Roxie. All the other horses luvved on me an telld me I is pritty.

Meegan an Jassper is both reel skinnie, I think it is funnie how horses look liek their people som times. Meegan has a blog too, you should go reed it. Jassper getted ribbins too, he is real pritty for a skinnie TB boy horse, evun if he IS meen to me, Roxie.
So anyways. I is a Show Horse now, Mom sez! Hoorays! An if that meens more peppurmints, then I gess I, Roxie, is a Show Horse.

I is suppost to be lerning how to stretch.

I is stretchy at a walk. Not so much at a trot tho, not yet.

Som one shuld tell Mom that if she wer to buy teh REAL rains from Dohver, I may be more stretchy in 'em. The real rains is nicer then these ones maede from rop an free keychains frum a motorcycle show.

These rains isn't so bad tho, they is purty loose.

Why is it that wen you trot over a pole, it is pritty much No Big Deel, an wen you trot over a couple of poles right necxt to eech other, it is also No Big Deel, but the second you trot over two poles in a X shape, you are SUCH A GOOD GIRL!!?

I, Roxie, has a new Horse Shoe Man. I do not liek Horse Shoe Men for the most part, an this one is no diffrint. In fackt, I exspecially do not liek New Horse Shoe Man cuz he holds my Roxie foot up for EVER, an I go to taek it away an put it down, an he WONT let me! Even wen I threttin to fall over side ways, or back words, or wen I start hoppin around. I evun picked him up off of the grownd, an this maeks no diffrince to him! He just holds on an is payshent an pets me an sez nice things. I evun tried to step on him. He is quick tho. An he putded my Roxie shoes back on, which usually meens I is goin som place. I gess ther is no horses there tho. Humins must walk traels on there OWN.

Did you guys know that it is possibul to go on trael rides all by your own Roxie self?
I did not know this.
Ther is traels behind the barn an i has been exploring them. I haev been allowing Mom to ride along cuz she givved me grain foods and Good Girls an so i forgivved her for the vet laydee and the violayshuns of my Roxie mouf. We horses is purty likelee to forgive. We is good at it. But we do NOT forgit! >:(
Anyhoo, yeah. Ther is a rode, and i walks down it. And ther is a field, and i walks in it. An i think ther is trees too but i hasn't gone ther yet. Mom dusn't haev too much tiem latelee.
